Irský setr (Irish Red Setter) je svérázný, osobitý, atletický a velice kvalitní pes, s laskavým výrazem. Má značně vyvážené proporce. Svým temperamentem je horlivý a aktivní, povahou pak inteligentní, laskavý a velmi loajální.

PŮVOD:
Irský setr (Irish Red Setter) byl vyšlechtěn v Irsku jako lovecký pes. Vznikl křížením Irského červenobílého setra (Irish Red and White Setter) a neznámého vskutku červeně zbarveného psa. Jako čistý typ byl identifikován v 18. století. Irský Red Setter Club byl založený v roce 1882, a to především s cílem podporovat jeho chov. Tento klub vydal v roce 1886 chovný standard plemene a organizoval zkoušky loveckých psů a od této doby také udával plemenný standard. V roce 1998 klub publikoval pracovní styl plemene. Standard a pracovní styl společně popisují fyzickou formu a pracovní schopnosti plemene.
Irský červený setr (Irish Red Setter) se během let vyvinul do vytrvalého, zdravého a inteligentního psa, který má nejen vynikající pracovní schopnosti, ale také ohromnou životní sílu.
POPIS:
Irský setr (Irish Red Setter) je pes velice vyvážených proporcí.
Hlavu má dlouhou a hubenou. Čenich a lebka jsou stejné délky a paralelních linií. Lebku má oválnou s dobře ohraničeným týlovým výčnělkem. Stop je dobře definovaný. Nos má široce otevřená chřípí, jeho zbarvení je tmavě mahagonové, tmavě ořechové nebo černé. Čelisti mají téměř stejnou délku. Oči by neměly být příliš velké, mají tmavě lískovou nebo tmavě hnědou barvu. Uši jsou mírné velikosti a jemné textury, nízko, poněkud dozadu posazené, svěšené blízko u hlavy. Krk je poněkud delší, velmi svalnatý, ne příliš silný a mírně klenutý. Tělo je vždy úměrné velikosti psa. Hruď má hlubokou, vpředu dosti úzkou. Bedra má svalnatá a mírně klenutá. Ocas je mírné délky, úměrný k velikosti psa, dosti nízko posazený, u kořene silný, směrem ke konci se zužuje, je nošený v úrovni nebo pod linií zad. Přední končetiny má rovné, šlachovité a dobrých kostí. Zadeček má silný a široký. Zadní končetiny jsou od boků ke hleznům dlouhé a svalnaté, od hlezen k tlapkám pak krátké a silné. Tlapky má malé a velmi pevné, se silnými a klenutými prsty blízko u sebe. Pohyb je volný, při chůzi je hlava držená vysoko. Přední končetiny směřují dobře vpřed, jsou však zvedány jen nízko. Křížení nebo proplétání končetin je nepřijatelné.
VÝŠKA:
Pes má v kohoutku 58 až 67 cm.
Fena má v kohoutku 55 až 62 cm.
VÁHA:
Irský setr (Irish Red Setter) váží v rozmezí 27 až 32 kg.
SRST:
Irský setr (Irish Red Setter) má na hlavě, předních stranách končetin a na konečcích ocasu srst krátkou a jemnou, na ostatních částech těla a končetin je mírně delší. Srst je hladká a zcela prostá kudrlin či kadeří. Na horních částech uší je srst pernatá, dlouhá a hedvábná. Na zadních částech předních i zadních končetin je srst dlouhá a jemná. Poctivé množství srsti je také na břiše, její kraje mohou být rozšířené až na hruď a hrdlo. Tlapky jsou mezi prsty dobře pernaté. Ocas je pokrytý třásněmi mírně dlouhých chlupů. Každé zpeření je rovné a hladké. Zbarvení je bohatě kaštanové, avšak bez stopy černé. Bílé zbarvení na hrudi, hrdle a prstech nebo malá bílá hvězda na čele či úzký pruh nebo požár na nosu nebo na tváři nejsou příčinou diskvalifikace.

PÉČE:
Irský setr (Irish Red Setter) má srst, jenž potřebuje pravidelnou údržbu. Několikrát ročně musí být starší srst trimována. Také je nutné pravidelné kartáčování, asi 2 krát týdně. Chlupy z okolí zvukovodu nezapomínejte odstřihávat, jinak ouškům hrozí časté záněty.
